Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Meter Upgrade Project

CCWSA will begin upgrading meters to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters in December 2025.  The AMI system will allow CCWSA to remotely read meter data multiple times each day.  This new and improved system will help to improve operational efficiency, reduce water loss and increase customer satisfaction.   CCWSA has partnered with M&E Construction for the  change-out due to the large volume of meter conversions.  M&E staff will be identifiable by their uniforms and vehicles.  The meter changeout process could cause a 15 minute interruption to your water service.

We have prepared a list of frequently asked questions to better assist you with questions regarding the meter upgrade.  Should you have any additional questions, please contact a CCWSA Customer Service Representative at 770-479-1813 or email customerservice@cherokeewaterga.gov.

What is AMI?

AMI stands for Automated Metering Infrastructure.  The system allows CCWSA to access the meter reading remotely to obtain consumption data  for analysis and bill creation.

Why is CCWSA investing in this technology?

CCWSA has been researching replacing the current aging water meter system for 2 years.  This new smart meter technology will provide a number of benefits to CCWSA customers.  CCWSA can reduce the costs of reading meters manually, identify system leaks and help serve customers better with this technology.

Will they change out my meter if I am not home?

CCWSA has contracted with M&E Construction for the meter changeout.  You do not need to be at home for the meter changeout.  Proper protocol and procedures will be followed to remove the old meter and install the new smart meter.

Why was a doorhanger placed at my home?

When meters are changed, a doorhanger will be left to notify you of the status of the meter changeout.  A Green Doorhanger indicates the meter has been upgraded.  A Red Doorhanger indicates the meter was not upgraded and the reason why the changeout could not be performed.  The doorhangers provide phone numbers if additional information is needed.

Why is my water discolored?

  • Cloudy or Milky Water – Your water may be discolored temporarily after the installation process has been completed.  Disconnecting the water meter can cause tiny air bubbles to build in the water line.  When the tap is turned on, the pressure is released allowing the bubbles to appear, just as removing the cap from a soda bottle causes the soda to fizz.  To remove air from the line, turn on a cold faucet inside or outside the home and let it run for 5-10 minutes.  The water is perfectly safe to drink.

Why is my water pressure lower since the meter was changed?

After a new meter installation, low water pressure at the faucet is often caused by sediment stirred up from the water lines clogging the faucet’s aerator, a small screen that mixes air with water.  The aerator’s fine mesh is meant to catch any dislodged rust, dirt or mineral deposits that travel to your faucet.  Unscrewing the aerator and cleaning out any debris is a simple process and can likely correct a low pressure issue.   This video tutorial will help walk you through the cleaning process.
