During the recent cold spell in our area when temperatures dropped below freezing for multiple days (December 23 – 27th, 2022) Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority (CCWSA) received approximately 300 calls from customers. Of those calls, a majority of the problems were on the customer side of the meter. Our system has approximately 82,000 meters, of which only one meter froze. We strive to have a well-maintained system and to be prepared during emergency situations.
There is a possibility of more very cold temperatures in our area in the next few months.
Here are a few tips to be prepared and help avoid freezing lines that can cause water line breaks –
1. Have a backup plan to provide water for essential needs, like water for drinking, cooking, pets, livestock, etc., in case your plumbing freezes or breaks.
2. It is good practice to allow a small trickle of water to run from your faucets during very cold weather – especially vulnerable plumbing like outdoor spigots, areas without insulation, and pipes in outside walls.
3. If you plan to go out of town for an extended period of time, turn the water off at the meter and drain the water from the plumbing in the house.
