Water Service Line Types & Responsibilities
CCWSA distributes water throughout the county through it’s water mains. Connected to the water mains are “Service Lines” that deliver water to individual customers. There are two types of service lines:
- CCWSA Owned Service Lateral Lines (from the main to the meter)
- Customer Owned Service Lines (from the meter to the structure)
The portion of the service lines from the meter to the structure is located on private property and is not part of CCWSA’s system.
See diagram below.
Ensuring We Are Lead-Free
Cherokee County Water & Sewerage Authority has meticulously developed and completed the CCWSA service lateral line and customer-owned service line inventory. This inventory is searchable by address. Regulations regarding the inventory as well as additional information can be found here.
FAQ’s
- No Lead has been used or detected in CCWSA’s system.
- CCWSA has been monitoring and reporting lead data since 1992 and has over 1,000 samples analyzed.
- There are no known public lead service laterals.
- Local building standards required Lead-Free Plumbing Materials since 1992.
Lead was not typically used in this area but if it was used, it was customarily used on pipes > 2″ in diameter. Lead can enter drinking water when plumbing materials (pipes, faucets and fixtures) that contain lead corrode. Lead service lines can be a significant source of lead in the water and plumbing fixtures installed prior to 1992, can still contain lead due to lead solder within some fixtures and internal deposition from previously used and privately owned lead pipes.
Identifying Service Line Materials
A variety of construction materials have been used over the years for service lines. In Cherokee County, homes built prior to 1992 could have some lead plumbing components.
CCWSA has inspected service laterals and service lines throughout it’s service area and this inventory reflects the classification of those materials as “Non-Lead” or “Lead Status Unknown”.
